North Philadelphia Station Rehabilitation

A view of the new headhouse being constructed at North Philadelphia.

The sounds of progress – construction equipment and hammers – have become an important part of the landscape at the intersection of Broad & Leigh as SEPTA continues its $21 million capital improvement and infrastructure enhancement program at the North Philadelphia Station along the Broad Street Line.  When it is completed in mid 2008, customers traveling to and through this major transportation hub will enjoy a modern, ADA accessible station.

The station is being fully rehabilitated and will include
new lighting, signage, and Art-In-Transit.

The scope of work currently in progress or scheduled to be completed as part of the North Philadelphia Station Rehabilitation Project includes:

  • An elevator from the street level to the station mezzanine and elevators from the mezzanine to the northbound and southbound platforms
  • A new escalator at the northeast corner of Broad and Lehigh
  • Rebuilt staircases throughout the station
  • Weather protected street level headhouses for the stairs, elevator and escalator
  • Rehabilitated station platforms with new tile surfacing and tactile warning edges and rehabilitated interior stairs
  • An expanded south mezzanine to create a more open space
  • New station lighting and finishes
  • A new cashier booth and fare collection line
  • Renovations to the Police Zone Headquarters
  • Special artist designed gates at all five street level headhouses commissioned through SEPTA’s Art-in-Transit Program
  • New signage and graphics
  • Streetscape improvements at the intersection of Broad St and Lehigh Ave
  • New station entry access from Glenwood Avenue

To date, the bulk of the project work has occurred along Broad Street between Lehigh Avenue and Silver Street.  The street level headhouses for the escalator, stairs, and elevator have all been installed and glazed.  Work crews are preparing to install new sidewalks, curbs and street paving.

New headhouses will cover the newly installed escaltor and elevator.

Inside the station, work to install the new elevators and an escalator is ongoing.  An existing part of the mezzanine was expanded to accommodate a new elevator down to the northbound platform and new staircase access to the street; the west side of the mezzanine will also increase in size and provide elevator access to the southbound platform and new staircase access to the street.  In addition, modern electrical wiring and brighter lighting add to the new wall finishes, plumbing work and life safety systems being installed.

An Art-In-Transit gate is featured at one of the completed headhouses.

Rehabilitating stations is never an easy task but SEPTA has worked hard to minimize the impact of the construction on our customers.  Once completed, North Philadelphia Station will offer Broad Street Line riders convenient and accessible access to North Philadelphia, South Philadelphia, and Center City.
